What is EMV?
EMV is a global card payment standard. It is named after its original developers (Europay, MasterCard and Visa). It is currently being used in over 80 countries.
What is a Chip or EMV Card?
A Chip or EMV card is a card with a chip-based technology that features an embedded microchip to provide enhanced security and protection against fraud.
Why Chip Cards?
The new chip on your card provides additional security when used at a chip-enabled terminal. Data stored on the chip is more difficult to counterfeit. No matter how you use your card, every purchase is covered by zero liability protection, so you can use your ARC card with confidence.
How do I use my Chip Card?
Can a Chip Card still be used at locations without a chip-enabled terminal?
Yes, for the foreseeable future your card will be issued with a chip on the front and the familiar magnetic stripe on the back of the card. This will enable the card to be used in magnetic stripe terminals as well as chip-enabled terminals.
Will anything change during online purchases?
No. You will use your Chip Card for online purchases by following the same process you do today.
Will I be required to use my PIN?
Depending on where you shop, you may be prompted to use your PIN when purchasing with your card. When prompted for a PIN, ARC encourages our members to select "signature" or simply tell the clerk you wish to use "credit" and sign for the transaction.
Can I use my Chip Card outside of the U.S.?
Yes. Chip Cards are widely used in international markets and are accepted in more than 80 countries. Having a Chip Card will make it easier for you to make purchases and complete ATM transactions when you travel internationally.
