Save Now for Retirement

Retirement planning can feel intimidating. If you're early in your career, retirement may seem so far away that it's easy to put off. If you're further along, you may worry that you haven't saved enough. The important thing to remember is that retirement planning isn't about making one perfect financial decision. It's about making consistent progress and adjusting your strategy as your life changes.

At ARC Federal Credit Union, we encourage you to start with what you can control today. If your employer offers a retirement plan, learn how it works. Does your employer offer matching contributions? If so, find out how much you need to contribute to receive the full available match. An employer match can be a valuable part of your overall compensation and an important tool for building retirement savings.

Starting early also gives you the advantage of compound growth. In simple terms, compounding means your investments have the opportunity to generate returns, and over time, those returns can potentially generate returns of their own. The longer your money has to grow, the more powerful that effect can become. That's why even modest contributions early in your career can matter.

But what if you didn't start early?

Start where you are. If you're in your 40s or 50s and feel behind, avoiding the subject won't improve the situation. Review what you've already saved, what you're currently contributing, and what opportunities you have to increase that amount. Paying off a loan, receiving a raise, or reducing another expense can create an opportunity to redirect some of that money toward retirement.

One strategy is to increase your retirement contribution gradually. For example, consider adding 1% when you receive a raise or during your annual benefits review. A small increase may be easier to absorb into your monthly budget while still helping you make meaningful progress over time.

You may also encounter decisions about Roth versus traditional retirement contributions. There's no universal answer that's right for everyone. Taxes, income, age, employer options, and your broader financial situation can all affect that decision. That's where guidance from a qualified tax or financial professional can be especially valuable.

Most importantly, don't treat retirement planning as something you do once. Revisit your savings when your income changes, you change jobs, pay off debt, or experience another major life event.
